How does life pulsate in the city’s lower-income neighbourhoods, from informal settlements to rehabilitation and resettlement sites? How are identities shaped through everyday labour and community life? How are aspirations imagined and realised?
ComplexCity City Walks across informal settlements and resettlement colonies in Mumbai, Ambujwadi (Malad), Lallubhai Compound (Mankhurd), and Kranti Nagar (Kandivali East), offer a way to understand the city through the lived experiences of its people.
We have carefully curated two city walks – in the basti (informal settlement) of Ambujwadi (Malad), and in the rehabilitation and resettlement colony of Lallubhai Compound (Mankhurd). The walks are representative of housing and identity journeys that many people from marginalised communities are forced to make.
Building on this experience, we have recently initiated a new curated walk in Kranti Nagar, Kandivali East, an informal settlement shaped by informal work and strong community networks. Led by youth from Kranti Nagar and Damu Nagar, the walk offers insights into everyday labour, local solidarities, and the ways residents collectively build belonging and resilience in the city.
YUVA is well-primed to facilitate these walks, having worked since 1998 in Ambujwadi, 2004 in Lallubhai Compound, and more recently with youth and community members in Kranti Nagar. We have worked extensively on housing, livelihoods, and with children and youth in these settlements, and have helped set up and strengthen children’s and youth collectives who lead these walks. Our role is to empower the walk facilitators and support them in sharing their lived experiences with wider audiences.
